Establish a routine. Set aside a time every day for your son to study. He will be less likely to complain about homework if he knows your expectations up front and is prepared for them.
Create a comfortable place to study. This might be the kitchen table, a desk in his room or a corner of the living room. Remove distractions such as television and video games to help your son concentrate.
Motivate your son with a reward system. A chart tracking his progress provides visual motivation, helping him stay on track when his fun-loving, creative personality causes him to lose focus. Set a goal together for his studying, offering verbal encouragement and positive reinforcement when he meets his goal.
Encourage your son to incorporate his own preferences in his study time. Let him choose whether to listen to his favorite music or to work in silence. He might prefer to take frequent breaks or to power through the entire session. A child who is creative and struggles with homework might not conform to a traditional study atmosphere.
Alleviate your son's frustration with well-timed humor. If he is getting overwhelmed with his schoolwork, take a break and ease the tension with a short, creative activity. Watch a funny cartoon, make up a silly dance or find some other activity to help him switch gears.
