How to Get Your Ph.D. in Social Work

Many people go into social work with the desire to teach others about social work. It could be that they don't enjoy field work or they prefer teaching. Regardless of the reasons, most colleges and universities require professors to hold a Ph.D. in social work to teach. If you want teaching to be part of your career path, earning your Ph.D. in social work should be part of your plan.

      Obtain a master's degree in social work. Research social work Ph.D. programs and select programs you want to apply to. Consult with an academic advisor or admissions counselor to find out the application process.

      Take any tests or certification exams required for program applications. For example, if English is not your native language, you will likely need to submit your TOEFL scores. Some programs may also require recent MAT scores.

      Apply to Ph.D. programs. Follow the guidelines for the application process for each program carefully. Different programs have different requirements for applications. Make sure you've completed each part of the application and submitted it prior to the deadlines.

      Go through the Ph.D. program. Generally, programs are highly structured and your advisor will help you determine the best overall schedule for you. Many social work Ph.D. programs take between five and seven years to complete.

      Defend your dissertation. As part of the Ph.D. program, you will have a dissertation advisor. You will be expected to complete your dissertation and defend it to a panel of professors to be given your doctoral degree.
