How to Get My Master's in Social Work

If you have a passion for service and want a vocation helping others, social work is a good option to consider. Many social worker positions in clinical, occupational, school or nonprofit settings require a master's degree in Social Work (MSW). Several universities offer this post-graduate degree, which involves both course work and field work, and typically can take a minimum of one to two years to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a bachelor's degree in one of the social sciences, such as sociology, psychology, social work, anthropology, ethnic studies or counseling. Although most programs don't specify the area where you need a bachelor's degree, studying one of these will improve your understanding of the MSW curriculum.

    • 2

Volunteer at any of a variety of health care facilities or social service agencies, such as a hospital or assisted living center, a crisis center for children or families, or a mental health treatment facility. Try to get experience in different settings; look for organizations that have a social worker on staff. This will teach you about the real-life aspects of social work. Decide which area of social work you would like to pursue as a career.

    • 3

Browse online directories of graduate school programs, such as GradSchools.com. Follow links to the various universities' websites to get relevant details about their MSW programs. Look at each program's area of focus, such as public policy, counseling, social planning or nonprofit social service, and identify the ones that match your career goals. Study the eligibility criteria to learn what qualifications you must meet. Most universities will require a minimum score on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).

    • 4

Take the GRE and identify which universities you would qualify for based on your score. Examine the different programs, comparing tuition fees, available financial aid and the types of projects the schools undertake. Find out about placement services the university provides. Select a few programs that suit your requirements and confirm their accreditation status on the Council on Social Work Education's website.

    • 5

Apply in the prescribed format with your transcripts, GRE scores, reference letters, resume, personal statement and any other details the university requests. Wait for acceptance into a course.

    • 6

Take the specified courses, which generally deal with social programs and policies, social research, methods of practice, human growth and development, communication, and counseling. Complete the program requirements for field work, which is typically 900 hours for accredited MSW programs.
