How to Get a PhD in Literature

It typically takes four to five years to get a doctorate in literature. Doctoral candidates will extensively study historical and modern literary texts. Students are encouraged to study works from multiple cultures and languages, which is why many students are fluent in a second language. You also can choose a specialization, such as Greek or Italian literature, and must complete a dissertation.
