Remove the lid from the shoebox.
Cut a 4-inch horizontal slit in the long edge of the shoebox, near the bottom. Use the ruler to make sure the slit is straight. Cut another slit in the opposite side across from the first one.
Cut paper into strips 4 inches wide and tape the strips together to make a long continuous sheet. Insert this into one of the slits and pull it out through the other so that the sheet is running through the shoebox.
Place a rubber band around the shoebox so that it stretches over the top and passes by the forward edge of the slit on each side. Place another band around the box, aligned with the other edge of the slits.
Tie a fine-line marker to both rubber bands using yarn or string. The marker should be held vertically with its tip just touching the sheet of paper.
Pull the sheet of paper through the shoebox. The marker will draw a line on the sheet. To demonstrate the seismograph, have a student or partner shake the table or surface the seismograph is resting on. The line drawn by the marker will waver.
