In this project, students gather a variety of leaves in different stages of color change, preferably in the fall. Place the leaves in jars, and subsequently pour 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol in each jar as well. After about five minutes, the rubbing alcohol will work as a solvent and extract the color that the leaves will turn. This allows the students to observe the colors that the leaves will change during the fall months.
Most students understand that plants need water to survive, but not everyone knows where the water travels within a plant. Using color dyes, students can track the path of water through a carnation flower in this science project. Simply pour water into a vase and dye the water with food coloring. Place a couple of carnations in the vase. Students should record their observations after one hour, six hours, 24 hours and 48 hours to track the path of the water within the flower. They should begin to see the colored water move through the stem and into the petals of the flower.
In this biology science fair project, students will learn about what types of light are best for growing plants.Test plants by putting them under a variety of different light types, including in a dark room, in natural sunlight and under a synthetic light. To keep the experiment simple, there should be only one changing variable: the type of light. Therefore, only one type of green plant should be used. Consider potted flower plants or green plants, such as ferns. The students should record their observations over five to seven days and ultimately decide which light type they believe is best for growing plants.
In this science project, students can learn if sound levels influence plant development and growth. During this project, students will grow the same types of plants in two different rooms. Plants that can be used include potted flower plants, such as geraniums, or green plants, such as ferns. In one room, there should be no noise at all. In the other room, a loud radio should be played at all times. To rule out the influence of light, students should ensure that each room has the same amount of natural sunlight coming into it. Over the course of a few days, students should observe if the plants are affected, and in what ways, by the noise or lack thereof.
