Sports Project Ideas

Sports play a large role in American culture, and individuals of all ages enjoy watching and playing games such as soccer, football, hockey, golf and baseball. While sports emphasize the importance of working as a team and promote physical fitness, they also present a variety of educational opportunities for children. Encourage middle school students to reinvest themselves in school through projects that focus on various elements of their favorite sports.
  1. Science

    • Students can complete many interesting projects on sports as they relate to science. For example, many children would enjoy examining the weight of football quarterbacks and how it relates to their successful tackles on the field. Students can also examine the ways in which elements such as body positioning impact pitching in baseball, how the force of drag affects swimming speed and how the material and flex of a hockey stick impacts the accuracy of shots in hockey.

    Math

    • The subject of math, which tends to be disliked by students who find it drab and boring, becomes more exciting when it is studied from a sports-related angle. Students can practice their graphing skills using baseball statistics, or calculate the batting averages of their favorite players. Geometry can be used to determine how the angle at which one stands from a basketball net impacts how accurately the ball reaches the net.

    Social Studies

    • School sports projects can also relate to social studies. Have children interview an older friend or family member about the various sports they played when they were young and how sports impacted their childhoods. Students will be surprised and interested by what they find out; for example, perhaps they never knew that grandpa played football on his high school team, or that his father experienced a sports-related injury at a young age. The students can reflect on what sports may have been like in the recent past and what elements they believe have changed from then until today.

    Additional Ideas

    • Older students can conduct independent research and write a paper on the history of their favorite sport. Many sports have rich histories that include inventors, the first games, the development of leagues and changes in rules, team uniforms and other elements over the years. Younger children can read a book on the history of their favorite sport, or their favorite sports team or star, and provide a simple written report or oral presentation.
