Have each student make one slide for a slide show that will introduce everyone in the class. Begin by taking a photograph of each student posing as if they are participating in a favorite activity. Import the photos into the program. Next have the students draw around the photographs, creating the details of an appropriate scene. Finally, have students write captions for their photos, telling their names and what they like about their chosen activity. Finally, record the students' voices reading what they have written. Assemble the photos into a slide show and present it to the class.
Have students practice counting by twos by drawing two small circles. Then have them copy the circles and count by twos while they paste more onto their page until they reach 10. Practice fractions by drawing circles and dividing them into fractional pieces. Pour paint into a specified fraction and label it. Write a story problem and create an animation to go with it. Assign different students different patterns to create with stickers. Then have students move from computer to computer identifying each pattern. Create a slide show of a 24-hour day comprised of one slide from each student for each hour.
The movies option in Kid Pix can be used for a variety of projects. Students can practice word choice by using precise verbs and adjectives to describe the movies. Or they can practice vocabulary words by having to write a sentence about a movie that includes a vocabulary word. A good exercise in creativity is having children combine three or four movies, connecting them into a single story.
A slide show can be a medium for students to demonstrate what they have learned in almost any topic. Have students plan their slide show on paper. Students should make a more generic slide show before tackling one that demonstrates or explains a complex topic. These "practice slide shows" can be done individually or in groups with each student preparing one slide. Topics could include classroom rules, book reports, an ABC book, a joke or riddle book, or a glossary of vocabulary words.
