Assign each student a different research topic or let your students pick their own from a prepared list. Some possible ideas for topics include the early history of the Sioux tribe; where the Sioux tribe lives today; the religious practices of the Sioux Indians; and the major health problems that affect these people. Require students to use evidence researched either on reputable Internet resources, on school library databases or in books from the school or public library.
Celebrate one of the Sioux holidays in your classroom. Examples include the Spotted Tail Memorial Celebration, the Sioux Coronation, the Sioux Ceremonial or tribal fairs. Divide students up into groups, and have each group be responsible for a different element of the celebration. Suggestions for group responsibilities include preparing traditional cuisine, setting up the room with decorations and preparing speeches about the symbolic and historical meaning of the event.
When first introducing the concept of Sioux Indians to early elementary or elementary school learners, have them color in a picture of a Sioux Indian, so that they can get a sense of what these people look like in their traditional garb. Have older students engage in a modified Sioux Indian craft. Popular Sioux crafts include bead work, buffalo-hide paintings, pottery and quilt work. Students can work on the crafts for a homework assignment or in class.
Web Quests utilize Internet technology to give students background information on a given topic and let them discover ways in which to solve problems and analyze data by themselves. Try one of the many Native American Web Quests that are focused on the culture of the Sioux Indians or allow the students to follow the Trail of Tears and discover the hardships and struggles that many Native Americans faced. Students can work together in groups, or alone during computer time.
