Tangerine Book Project Ideas

"Tangerine," a young adult novel by Edward Bloor tells the story of Paul Fisher, a young boy in a family full of secrets. When Paul, his older brother Erik and his parents move to Tangerine, Florida, those family secrets begin to seep out. When teaching "Tangerine" in your language arts classroom, assign creative book projects inspired by the novel.
  1. Character Journals

    • Teach students about characterization through character journals. Ask students to write a specific number of journal entries as a character of their choosing. Students should write as their character and respond to events in the story. Encourage students to study the language their character uses to express himself through dialogue in the story.

    Author Study

    • Edward Bloor, author of "Tangerine," has written several other books for young adults. These include "London Calling," "Crusader," "Taken" and "Memory Lane." For a class project, invite students to read one or two other novels by Edward Bloor, to gain perspective on the author. In addition, encourage students to research Edward Bloor through his website. Next, ask students to compare the stories they have read, focusing on specific aspects of Bloor's writing, such as plot, characterization or tone.

    Scrapbook

    • Encourage students to create a scrapbook as a book project to accompany "Tangerine," recommends the website Scholastic. Encourage students to create newspaper clippings, newsletters, personal letters and drawings to use in their scrapbook. Invite students to consider the tone of the story when choosing colors, pictures and fonts for their scrapbook. Students might create a scrapbook based on a particular character, or an unnamed resident of Tangerine who is documenting the events as they unfold.

    A New Ending

    • Encourage your students' creativity by asking them to imagine what happens to the characters of Tangerine after the book ends. Students might focus on a specific character or event in their project, or write an entire new chapter. Encourage students to be creative by writing a newspaper article, creating a poster or video for their project.
