Teach students about characterization through character journals. Ask students to write a specific number of journal entries as a character of their choosing. Students should write as their character and respond to events in the story. Encourage students to study the language their character uses to express himself through dialogue in the story.

Encourage students to create newspaper clippings, newsletters, personal letters and drawings to use in their scrapbook. Invite students to consider the tone of the story when choosing colors, pictures and fonts for their scrapbook. Students might create a scrapbook based on a particular character, or an unnamed resident of Tangerine who is documenting the events as they unfold.
Encourage your students' creativity by asking them to imagine what happens to the characters of Tangerine after the book ends. Students might focus on a specific character or event in their project, or write an entire new chapter. Encourage students to be creative by writing a newspaper article, creating a poster or video for their project.
