Kindergarten Glyphs Ideas With Hearts

A glyph is a visual representation of data that your students have collected about themselves. Kindergartners can create glyphs based on this information, and the finished product can help them build data collection and analysis skills. Use heart glyphs at Valentine's Day to incorporate math skills into your seasonal instruction. Your heart glyphs will help each of your kindergartners make sense of information about himself and represent it in a way that allows him to demonstrate what is important to him.
  1. Cupcake Hearts

    • Create paper heart-shaped cupcakes that describe the type of cupcake each student likes best. Ahead of time, prepare enough brown pieces of paper cut to represent a cupcake liner. Give a paper cupcake liner to each student. Provide red and pink paper hearts to represent the cupcake. Students who like chocolate cupcakes best choose a red heart; students who like vanilla cupcakes best choose a pink heart. Ask your students to add details to their cupcakes to further describe their favorite type. Students who like sprinkles glue sequins to their paper heart; students who do not like sprinkles leave the sequins off. Students who like chocolate frosting glue on tiny white paper hearts; students who like colored frosting glue on tiny purple paper hearts.

    Descriptive Heart People

    • To do descriptive heart people, have each kindergartner cut out a large heart from a piece of colored paper. Boys use red paper and girls use pink paper. The details on each heart person will describe characteristics of each of your students. Students with brown eyes glue on brown paper heart eyes; students with blue eyes glue on blue heart eyes; and students with green eyes glue on green heart eyes. Students with only brothers glue on orange paper arms and legs; students with only sisters glue on purple paper arms and legs; and students with brothers and sisters glue on black arms and legs. Students with a birthday in January through June glue on a white mouth; students with a birthday in July through December glue on a yellow mouth. Be as creative and elaborate as you desire, depending on your students' abilities and interest level.

    Heart Posters

    • Large heart posters can describe your kindergartners' favorite things. Boys receive large red hearts and girls receive large pink hearts. Students who like summer best glue a yellow paper sun to their heart; students who like winter best glue a blue paper snowflake to their heart. Kindergartners who like playing outside best glue red glitter around the edge of their heart; kindergartners who like playing inside best glue silver glitter around the edge of their heart. Kindergartners who like pizza best glue on gold sequins; kindergartners who like spaghetti best glue on blue sequins. Students write their name on their heart using a crayon in their favorite color.

    Heart Garland

    • Use heart garlands to allow each student to convey their favorite parts of Valentine's Day. Students who like Valentine's Day as their favorite holiday use red hearts to make their garlands; students who like a different holiday best use pink hearts. Students who would rather receive candy as a Valentine's gift glue their hearts to white string; students who would rather receive flowers glue their hearts to purple string. Kindergartners who like conversation hearts best glue silver glitter to their garland; kindergartners who like chocolate best glue gold glitter to their garland.
