Kindergarten Phys. Ed. Ideas

A habit of physical activity in elementary school can set the foundation for lifelong health and fitness. Unfortunately, exercise gets competition from television and video games. Physical education in kindergarten can help kids reach the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity they need each day, according to Let'sMove.gov. Use friendly competition and imagination to get kindergartners moving at school.
  1. Dead Ant Tag

    • Kids can be bugs and get moving.

Make a twist on the classic game of tag. Select a student to start as the "grasshopper." The other students run around, trying not to get tagged by the grasshopper. When a student is tagged by the grasshopper, he lies down on the ground with his hands and feet in the air, as a dead ant. The other students can tag the dead ant to free him and the student can continue to run around. An ant who is tagged three times becomes the new grasshopper.

What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?

    • Select a student to be "the fox" first. The fox stands at one end of a gym facing a wall. The rest of the class stands at the other end of the gym. Kids ask the fox, "What time is it, Mr.Fox?" The fox responds with a time on the hour, such as "three o' clock." The kids take three steps toward the animal. The students continue asking the fox for the time and moving closer. When the kids are close to the fox, the fox answers with "Dinner time!" and runs after the students. The first student tagged becomes the new fox.

    Nerf Dodge Ball

    • Divide the class into two teams to play nerf dodge ball. Play in a gymnasium so that the mid-line can serve as a boundary between the two teams. Give each team a variety of nerf balls of different sizes. Each team throws the balls at the students on the other team. If a student is hit with a ball, she is "out" and sits down. If she catches it, the thrower is out. Play until all the students on one team are out.

    Worm Tag

    • Select one student to start as the "worm." The worm tries to tag other students. A tagged student joins hands with the original worm and becomes a part of the worm chain. The worm chain tries to tag other students and the chain grows larger. Play until all the students are a part of the worm, or until the worm wears out.

    Mouse Trap

    • Make a human mouse trap in PE class.

Divide the class into two teams. One team, the mouse trap, stands in a circle at arms' width apart. The other team runs in and out of the circle. Ring a bell or set off a timer to signal the students in the circle to raise their arms and "close" the mouse trap. The students who are trapped in the mouse trap are out. Play until all the students have been caught.
