Kindergarten Activities for Kids

There are many activities to explore with your kindergartners. Students can make crafts, experiments and even bake. You can link the activity with a story you are reading in class or with another subject. Give them plenty of choices within the activity to make their own decisions and be creative.
  1. Yarn Mosaic Flowers

    • Kids can create a flower mosaic with yarn, paper and glue. Show the kids pictures of flowers for inspiration. Give them each a piece of construction paper and ask them to draw flowers on their paper in light pencil. Provide different colors of yarn to form the petals, stem and leaves. Have the children cut the yarn into small pieces, about two inches long. They will need one long green piece for a stem. Show the kids how to squeeze glue inside the petals and place the yarn pieces inside the shapes to fill them in. Have them draw a straight line of glue on the stem and add the long green piece of yarn. They can then add glue inside the penciled leaves and fill them in with yarn pieces.

    Sunflowers

    • Give kids the ingredients to grow their own plants.

Take the opportunity to teach a science lesson by growing plants in the classroom. Sunflowers grow relatively quickly. Give the students pots or paper cups containing soil and demonstrate how to plant the seeds. Talk about the things that plants need for growth, including water, sunlight and soil. Put the kids in charge of monitoring and watering their plants. When the plants begin to grow, teach the students about the different parts of the plant.

    Paper Plate Animals

    • Have children turn a paper plate into the head of a favorite animal. Distribute paper plates and instruct the children to use markers or crayons to make the plates the color of their chosen creature. Instruct them to draw ears and a nose or beak on colored construction paper, cut them out and glue them onto the head of the animal. Provide googly eyes or pipe cleaners to add to the plate.

    Homemade Applesauce

    • Make a snack and teach kids to follow directions.

Make a treat with kindergartners and teach them about measurements and following directions. Wash, core, peel and slice up twelve cooking apples ahead of time. Ask kids to add them to a large microwavable bowl with a measuring cup. Add 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of water and 1 tsp. of cinnamon. Cover the bowl with wax paper and microwave the mixture for nine minutes; stir the mixture. Cover the apples again and microwave for five to eight minutes or until the apples are soft. Let the kids help mash up the apples when they have cooled slightly. Serve the applesauce warm or put it in the refrigerator and serve it cold later on.
