A few weeks prior to the new year, take photos of each student in the kindergarten class while students are doing class work, having free time, or playing on the playground. Create a photo frame with the class using a foam frame cutout, foam shape pieces, foam numbers, glue, glitter, markers, feathers and magnetic tape. Give each child a photo frame cutout and supplies to decorate the frame. Instruct the kindergartners to first place the correct numbers that represent the new year along the top of the frame. Glue the numbers and allow them to decorate the frame using the rest of the supplies. Once the frames are dry, insert the photo and glue a piece of magnet strip on the back of the frame.
Create a pop-up new year card with kindergartners using construction paper, scissors, glue and glitter. Start with red and blue pieces of construction paper. Fold them in half and choose which color you want for the inside of the card. Cut four, double-parallel cuts along the fold line approximately 2 inches long from the center. Fold the flaps over and unfold them again. Open the card and pull up the flaps that were previously folded, which will be used to hold numbers. Cut out numbers to represent the new year and glue each number onto each flap inside the card in order. Glue the inside of the card to the second folded piece of construction paper. Decorate the card with markers and glitter.
Create a fireworks display with the kindergarten class using skewers, crayons, manila tag paper and paint. After explaining fireworks displays, showing the students examples, educating them on safety with fireworks and talking about personal experiences in class, give each child a piece of manila tag paper and crayons. Instruct them to use the bright colors and cover the manila completely with the crayons. Once they have finished coloring, have each kindergartner paint a thin layer over their paper with black paint so the entire surface is covered. Allow the picture to dry and, using a skewer, show the students how to scrape the paint off in a design that will resemble a fireworks display.
Create festive hats with your kindergarten class to celebrate the new year. Give each child a large piece of construction paper to use as the hat. Provide markers, glitter, paint, stencils, glue and crayons for the students to use to decorate one side of the construction paper. Once the students are finished decorating, take each piece of paper and fold in both top corners, overlapping to make a cone shape. Staple the hat together and cut off the excess paper, making the bottom equally round. Affix crepe paper from the top using glue or a stapler. Add decorations once the hat has been finished.
