Gifted & Talented Activities for Kindergarten

There is a small percentage of students in every kindergarten class that are fast learners or have special talents. Those who learn quickly may become bored, distracted or even disruptive if their needs are not met. Some kids will show obvious signs of precocious talent in music or art. These students must be challenged and motivated to help them reach their highest potential.
  1. Music

    • Provide kids with a special aptitude and talent for music with simple instruments to play. Encourage kids with good singing voices to use them. Let them use the recorder and harmonica to play songs that all the kids know and can sing along. "Mary Had a Little Lamb," "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" are all-time favorites. Drums of any kind are fun for kindergartners, especially bongo drums. Playing in drum circles is a good way to learn about rhythm.

    Art

    • A few students will be more advanced in their artwork. Their drawing and use of color puts them at a higher level of development than most students. Kindergartners have tremendous imaginations, and they must be provided with the means to express it, especially the more gifted artists. Give them art materials and turn them loose. Encourage their creativity. The other kids will follow the talented child's example and learn from her.

    Reading

    • Some students learn reading slowly while others learn more rapidly. The quick learners will soon become bored with simplistic reading material. Set aside a corner where the faster readers can read books they get in the library. Allow them to spend extra time in the library, reading and picking out their own books. Use reading as a reward and a diversion to the bright students. Allow them to read if they finish their regular lessons or activities ahead of everyone else.

    Miscellaneous Activities

    • Activities like more advanced crafts can occupy gifted and talented children. They love to cut up bright pieces of construction paper and glue things together. The kids who are the fastest learners with the best memories can get involved in special activities to challenge them. Learning sign language, Spanish, Braille or Morse Code are stimulating activities. Playing games of strategy such as checkers or chess will keep the advanced kindergartner occupied.
