PE Activities for Preschoolers

When young children first go off to preschool, the daily drill of classroom lessons and activities can be a bit much. Often, these young kids have energy to burn--and physical education activities are a great way to help them use their energy while learning a little bit about physical health.
  1. Who's Here Today?

    • When children first enter a classroom, they are often excited and energetic entering the day. Who's Here Today? is an activity that will help them focus their energy into a positive physical-education lesson. The activity require students to sing a song announcing their name in a roll-call manner. After they say their name, the entire class must jump up, sit down and turn around before moving on to the next student. This is a fun way to start the day, and also encourages daily exercise.

    Musical Line Movements

    • This physical-education activity is another that works well with preschool students. The teacher should prepare ahead of time by taping connecting lines across the gym floor. Ask the students to spread out and each pick a spot on a line. Start some fun, upbeat music and tell them to move as fast or slow as the music is going. Then, ask them to freeze. This is an exercise that helps them stay moving without exhausting them. It also will get some laughs as well.

    Chicken Stretch

    • This is a warm-up exercise that will have preschool students roaring with laughter by the end. Start the stretch off by asking each student to touch her knee to her chin. Have students alternate legs. Then, have the students put their thumb under their armpit and move their arm up and down. They must do this three times with each arm. Next, ask them to warm up their voices by grabbing the skin around their Adam's apple and making gargling noises. The final step is to combine all three exercises into one, and soon enough, there will be a classroom full of squawking chickens.

    Name Pantomime

    • This fun activity for preschoolers will not only help them in physical education, but also in basic grammar as well. Ask the students to choose an action that begins with the same letter as their first name--for instance, you could be Jumping John or Kicking Kathy. The student must do the action while shouting his name, then the rest of the class must follow suit. This is a great introductory activity that also gets their hearts pumping.
