Chocolate Activities for Kindergarten

Few things can grab a kindergartner's attention as well as chocolate. Turning that love for chocolate into fun classroom activities can create a rich environment and even guide them into a learning situation. Chocolate can be an excellent source of creative inspiration for your students
  1. S'mores

    • Make and share s'mores with your class. Use a hot plate in your classroom to roast a marshmallow before placing it on a solid chocolate candy bar. Then place your chocolate bar between two pieces of graham crackers. Make sure to never leave your hot plate unattended and that you are performing all of the cooking responsibilities. Let your students watch as you explain the process. Be sure to warn them of the dangers involved in using a hot plate.

    M&M Graphing

    • Give each student a bag of M&M chocolates. Instruct them to count each color and write down their information. Guide them through the process of turning their information into a bar graph detailing the results of their bag of M&M chocolates. After they have their information, let them know that they can begin eating their candies while they create their bar graphs. This activity gives them some early practice in graphing while they enjoy their favorite treat.

    Chocolate Art

    • Chocolate is packaged in multiple colors and styles, and packaged in many different shapes. Instruct your students to use glue to affix a variety of chocolates to construction paper. For inspiration, you can tell them to design their own personal chocolate wonderland. Make sure to bring plenty of candy because your students will likely want to consume some of their artistic materials for further inspiration.

    Charlie

    • For a relaxing day, put on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for your students. It is a fun movie they are sure to love and filled with important moral lessons. You may want to bring some chocolate for your students to enjoy during the film. Check your school rules regarding parent permission prior to starting the movie and request necessary permission to do so.

    Hot Chocolate

    • Mix a half cup of finely ground chocolate bars with a cup of milk and heat until boiling for 1 minute. Garnish the drink with marshmallows and increase the recipe to fit your class size. Serve it warm and let your students enjoy a classic chocolate drink.
