Mom Activities for Kindergarten

Kindergartners love hands-on activities, and many enjoy making things to take home and show off to loved ones. For Mother's Day, there are many activities that a kindergartner can do to show mom how much he loves and appreciates her. These activities are sure to bring a smile.
  1. Make a Craft

    • Making Mom a crown will surely make her feel like royalty.

Have kindergartners make a Mother's Day Crown using construction paper, scissors, tape or glue, and appropriate decorations. Suggest the children wait to "fit" the crown until they have it ready to go on Mom's head. That way, Mom can actually wear it. Encourage kindergartners to decorate the crown using pictures and images of things that they think makes their mom special.

Kindergartners can make real or artificial flowers in a flower pot for their moms. Using craft sticks and construction paper, have the children cut out pieces of paper that they can shape into flower petals and decorate, or have them cut flowers using a pattern out of the paper. Glue the petals or flowers to craft sticks, which can be colored green. Place the craft stick flowers into a small ceramic pot filled with brown dried beans. This activity can also be extended to have students decorate the flower pot. As an alternative, children can plant real flowers for their moms or use artificial flowers in place of the paper version.

    Send Love Through Food

    • Though kindergartners might not be able to safely handle much baking, that does not mean they can't decorate sugar cookies. Supply plenty of frosting in various colors, sprinkles and safe utensils, and let the kids enjoy creating a beautiful edible gift for mom. The children might choose to decorate several smaller cookies or one or two larger cookies. To really top this craft off, you can have the children decorate a box or other container to package the cookies in, and include a card or a gift tag.

If decorating cookies isn't an option, help the students create gift bags for their moms. Write a universal message for each child to sign, and include small foods or candies. For example, if including Hershey's Kisses or Hugs in the bag, supply a printed message that says, "Mom, I love all of the hugs and kisses you give me."

    Send a Message

    • Some of the best Mother's Day gifts are made from the heart. Using construction paper, glue, scissors and decorations, have kindergartners create a card for their moms. Consider providing a basic message for those who are still learning to write, or encourage the children to create their own messages. Be sure to allow time for glue to dry and decorations to set before sending the card home, and encourage the children to do as much of the work as possible. The card will not only send a nice message of appreciation to moms, but it might even make its way into the keepsake box.

Another option is to create a framed or ready-to-frame piece of poetry or verse. Depending on students' abilities, supply the words to copy or pass out a printed version for them to decorate. Another option would be to encourage students to write their own poem or message. Using a piece of heavy card stock or construction paper would work well for decorating.

    Give a Coupon

    • One thing moms love is help around the house. Print age-appropriate coupons for kindergartners to bind together and give their moms as a helpful gift. A generic way of accomplishing this would be for the coupon to say "Help with the Laundry," for example. That way, it is up to each mom to set a task appropriate to her child's skills. There are endless coupon message options, and the coupons can be decorated and then creatively bound as a gift.
