Kindergarten Activities on Famous Americans

There are many famous Americans who have changed and inspired the country through their intelligence, leadership, knowledge and talents. Whether it be a United States president or a classic author, kindergarten students will enjoy learning about these famous Americans through different types of projects that help students display their creative side and teach them about their country.
  1. Abraham Lincoln

    • Make log cabins out of small milk cartons and pretzel sticks to commemorate Abraham Lincoln's birthplace. Combine a lesson on President Lincoln being born in a log cabin to becoming a great president of the United States with a fun activity such as building individual log cabins. The students will learn about one of the most famous presidents and enjoy a creative activity.

    George Washington

    • Have a lesson about the famous cherry tree incident with George Washington. Tell the story of how a young George Washington supposedly cut his father's famous cherry tree but could not lie about what he had done. This story provides a lesson to kindergartens about honesty and not telling lies. As an activity have the students create hand print cherry trees to remind them of President Washington being unable to tell a lie. Make the students put their names on the hand print cherry trees and hang them around the classroom so the students can remember not to tell lies.

    Jackie Robinson

    • Teach the students about the famous African-American baseball player Jackie Robinson. Talk to the students about the struggles Robinson had in his life and how he overcame them. For an activity, cut out paper baseball shirts and have the kindergartners sponge paint the shirts and then make paper baseball bats and baseballs that have printed on them: "Jackie Robinson was a hero because...." The students will then write why they believe he was a hero. Put the shirts, bats and balls on a decorated bulletin board commemorating Jackie Robinson.

    Dr. Seuss

    • Read the book "Bartholomew and the Oobleck" by Dr. Seuss to the students and then make Oobleck. You will need a large mixing bowl, mixing spoon, green food coloring, 10 cups of cornstarch and 6 cups of room temperature water. Put water in the large bowl and add food coloring drop by drop until the water turns green. Mix in the cornstarch a cup at a time. Mix thoroughly. Have some extra cornstarch available for thickening the mixture. Place a glob of the mixture in a paper cup and give one to each kindergartner. Have the kids discuss what Oobleck can and cannot do. This can lead to teaching the properties of matter and learning about a famous American children's author, Dr. Seuss.
