Kindergarten students will not only be dazzled by the flashing lights and sirens of a fire house, but they'll also learn valuable information that may one day save their lives. Prior to going to the fire house, discuss fire prevention and fire safety and arrange the field trip as an extension activity. While at the fire house, students will likely learn how to stop, drop and roll; they'll learn how a fire house operates, how to prevent fires, and what to do in the event of a fire; and they may be able to tour a fire truck. Many children are afraid of the dentist; ease this fear with a field trip to a dentist office. Contact dentist offices in your area to arrange the field trip. On the excursion, children will learn the importance of brushing and flossing and how eating a healthy diet is important to oral health. The dentist may also take students on a tour of his office and show them how different instruments work -- he may even give out toothbrushes as a parting gift.
Your students will learn how a farm works and how important farming is on a farm field trip. Arrange a trip with a farm in the local area and prepare students by discussing things that happen on a farm and why farms are so important to people. On the trip, students will be taken on a tour of the farm, where they will learn about the different aspects of farm life, they may also be given the opportunity to feed animals and pick crops.
A field trip for kindergarten students can be as simple as going on a trip to a park. Bring paper and drawing materials along and encourage students to draw pictures of the setting. Take children on a walk and discuss different things that they see: trees, flowers and wildlife, for example. Set out a blanket, have a picnic lunch, and read a nature-related story. Provide students with paper bags and have them collect items, such as twigs, flowers, acorns and leaves. Upon returning to class, they can use the items they've collected to create a nature collage.
