Kindergarten students will enjoy using their problem-solving skills for this activity. Give each child ten counting cubes or blocks of different colors. Next explain that you will tell them which block to put first. For example, say, "The green cube should come first. Now attach the blue cube." Students will have fun trying to get their cubes put together first. This activity also encourages the students to be good listeners and follow directions the first time.
Get students up out of their seats for this fun game. Call out the names of students and where they should stand in line. For example, say, "Ben is first. Susan is second. Tom is third." Clap your hands slowly three times. Explain to students that they should be in their position in the line by the third clap. Continue calling students three at a time until they are able to be in line. After students seem to understand, add on to the number of students called at one time.
Give students a taste of an old carnival game. Gather five plain white cups. If desired, dress up as a clown to add to the students' interest level. Place one piece of candy under one of the cups. Mix the cups up. Ask the students one at a time to come to the front and guess which cup has a piece of candy under it. Make sure to keep using ordinal number language reinforcing the concept of ordinal numbers. Of course, in the end, each child should receive a piece of candy.
Take students outside for this fun game. If the weather is bad, this game should be completed in the gym. Divide the class into small groups of students. Ask the students to run a short race. When students finish, point out who came in first, second and third. Educators should not point out every place so that the child who came in last does not get upset.
