Have your kindergarten students practice making three-dimensional shapes with modeling clay. Divide students in pairs and give each pair a different shape to create, such as a sphere or cone. Before they begin, give the students a picture of their shape to guide them. Once everyone is finished, encourage the students to share their creations in front of the class. Give the student who creates the best shape a prize.
This game will help kindergarten students recognize the shapes that are around them every day. Divide students into groups of four or five. Give each group several different objects, such as baseballs, tissue boxes and jewelry boxes. Instruct the students to sort the items into piles of the same shapes. Once everyone is finished sorting, hold up each item and ask the students to call out the item's shape.
A scavenger hunt can help your students learn all about shapes. Divide your students into groups of three or four. Tell each group that you want them to find items in the classroom that are in the shapes of a cone, pyramid, cube and cylinder. The group who finds all the items first is the winner. Reward the winning group with a prize.
For this game, have the students try to guess the shape you are thinking of. For example, if you are thinking of a cube, say, "My shape is made of squares." If no one can guess the shape after your first clue, give the students another clue. The first student to guess the correct shape gets a piece of candy.
