Kindergarten Lessons on Numbers to 100

One major milestone of kindergarten math is the ability to count from one to 100. Fun counting games and lessons that teach students number recognition can help students meet this momentous goal. Find ways to incorporate counting into the games your students play. Break up the large task of counting to 100 into smaller goals, and encourage students to work together.
  1. Number Matching Game

    • Teach students to recognize numbers one through 100 with a number matching game. Gather 200 index cards and write numbers one through 100 on the cards, so that each number is written on two cards. Put matching pairs together and create sets of matching cards, about 20 cards to each set. Place students in pairs and give each pair a set of cards. Encourage students to shuffle the cards, then lay them face down on a table. Ask students to take turns turning cards over to make a match.

    Number Order

    • Get students working together with a group project. Gather 100 pieces of construction paper and number the papers one through 100. Shuffle the papers so that the numbers are out of order, then give each student three or four numbers, depending on the number of students in your class. Let students decorate their numbers with glitter or markers. Choose a blank space of wall and ask students to work together to tape the numbers on the wall in order, one through 100.

    Counting Beads

    • Teach students how to count to 100 with beads. Divide children into 10 groups. Give each group of students a piece of yarn with a knot tied on one end and ten large beads. Ask students to string the beads on the yarn in any way they choose, then tie the other end of the yarn when they are finished. Ask students to count all of the beads on the yarn, adding up to 100. Tie the 10 strings of beads together and hang them in the classroom.

    Number Scavenger Hunt

    • Plan a scavenger hunt to teach your students number recognition. Write the numbers one through 100 on small pieces of paper and hide them throughout the classroom. Ask students to search the classroom for the hidden numbers. Stand at the front of the classroom near a large table and help students lay their numbers in order on the table. As numbers are collected, encourage students to look for specific missing numbers. Ask students to count the numbers one through 100 to ensure that each number is found.
