Kindergarten Letter Lessons

Kindergarten is the time to build a good academic foundation for students. Learning letters is a basic skill that will help students learn letter sounds, letter blends, words and, ultimately, learn how to read. Use different methods to teach kindergarten students about the alphabet as a whole as well as individual letters.
  1. Craft Lessons

    • Use craft lessons to teach kindergarten students about letters. Give each student a piece of construction paper. Help him draw and cut out the first letter of his name on the paper. Then let him turn his letters into crazy creatures. Provide googly eyes, pom poms and other simple craft materials to create the creatures. Let each child stand in front of the class and tell about her letters and crazy creatures.

    Game Lessons

    • Infuse letter lessons with interactive games to help gain the interest of kindergarten students. Explain the concept of alphabetical order to kindergartners. Ask the students to line-up in alphabetical order by the first letter of their first names. Then have them line-up in alphabetical order again, but this time line-up based on the first letter of their last names. Have the children sit on the floor. Call out a letter and ask all the children who have that letter anywhere in their first or last name to stand up.

    Writing Lessons

    • Create writing lessons for kindergarten students. Hand each student a paper with all the letters printed on it. Also provide students with tracing paper. Have each student trace each of the letters onto the tracing paper. This lesson gives them practice in writing the letters correctly. Have one sheet that features the capital letters and other handout that features only the lower-case letters. Provide lined-paper for students to attempt to write the letters again without tracing, referencing their traced paper.

    Other Kindergarten Letter Lessons

    • Use a variety of lessons to teach kindergarten students about the alphabet. Make up a tune and use the alphabet letter names as the lyrics. Show children how to form the alphabet letters using sign-language. Use the hand signs in conjunction with the song to help students learn the alphabet.

Have students go on a treasure hunt. Have students name objects they see in the classroom that start with each of the letters of the alphabet.
