Kindergarten Pinwheel Lessons

From science to art, pinwheels can be presented in a variety of lessons. They are whimsical little objects that can easily bring a smile to a child’s face. They can be used to teach important concepts or they can also be adapted to create a lovely gift for a family member.
  1. Study the Wind

    • Windmills generate electricity using the wind and this natural resource is becoming increasingly popular. Teach the students about the benefits of utilizing the wind to produce electricity and then have them make their own pinwheel to represent a small windmill.

    Math Wheels

    • Use pinwheels to teach kindergarten students about clocks. After making their own pinwheels, the students can learn the difference between turning it clockwise and counterclockwise. The teacher can compare the pins of the wheel to the hands on a clock to help the students generalize the mathematical concept.

    Get Crafty

    • During an art lesson, students can create a bouquet of pinwheel flowers. Have the students create the bouquet to give to their mothers or grandmothers during Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day.

    Comparison Lessons

    • There are many objects and flowers in nature that mimic a pinwheel. Have the students find objects that look like pinwheels and set up a game to see how many objects they can find. Encourage the students to look for flowers, ink blots or pictures in books and magazines.
