Veterans Day Crafts for Kindergarten

Veterans Day is a holiday that is celebrated each November to honor military members and the sacrifice they make to keep the country free. Kindergarteners can comprehend this sacrifice in small ways, and a variety of crafts will help you teach concepts of the holiday. Crafts can also teach students to be grateful for their freedom. Discuss what Veterans Day is, and then provide a variety of art supplies and watch your kindergarteners show you what they have learned.
  1. Cards

    • Provide kindergartners with a variety of patriotic-colored paper and art supplies and ask them to create cards for active military personnel. Help each student write a message of thanks to the soldier. Browse the Internet or ask family members with soldiers overseas to find addresses to send your cards to. Talk with your kindergartners about how the cards will make the soldiers feel. Continue making cards over a period of two or three weeks, then send them off just before Veterans Day.

    Flags

    • Flags are an important symbol of the United States, and making a few with your kindergartners will help build pride in country, as well as help them identify their country's flag and what it stands for. Have students color blank flags or glue small pieces of red, white and blue paper in the appropriate spots. Beads, stickers and glitter are additional art supplies that can be used to make flags. Attach the flags to dowels or add magnets to the back so they can proudly display their craft.

    Soldier Puppets

    • Puppets made to look like soldiers can teach kindergartners more about the job of military members. Use toilet paper tubes, socks or paper bags as the base for your puppets. Supply olive green and tan construction paper, shaky eyes and other craft supplies. Display several pictures of what soldiers look like and encourage kindergartners to be creative with their puppets. Ask kindergartners to make up short puppet shows and then display the puppets as Veterans Day decorations.

    Famous Soldier Collages

    • Kindergartners can understand simple facts about famous soldiers and how they contributed to the freedom of the country. Print out enough pictures of famous soldiers so each student will have one. Show the students each picture and talk about two or three major things that soldier did to contribute to freedom. Give each student a picture and ask him to glue it to a piece of blank paper. Then ask the students to draw pictures to show what that soldier is known for. Ask each student to share his collage with the class.
