Let your students design cards to send to veterans in a local veterans hospital. Give them red, blue or white paper to make the card. Then let them decorate the cover. They can use stickers of the eagle, the American flag, or other American symbols. Your class can create a poem to place on the inside of the card or simply write "Thank you!" Have the children sign the cards. Place them in a large envelope and mail them to the chosen veterans hospital.
Invite a local veteran or two to your class to spend time with your students. You can ask your guests to give a short speech about patriotism and then answer questions. Your guests may want to read a story to your students. You can have a pre-selected group of stories about patriotism available for your guests. Before your guests leave, present them with a gift or card from your students to show appreciation for their service to America.
If you have access to a military or veterans museum, you can take your students on a field trip to see the exhibits or attend an educational program. If you're not near these types of museums, contact your local history museum's education department to see whether they have special Veterans Day programs for kindergarten students. If they don't offer a specific Veterans Day program, they may be able to create an age-appropriate program around exhibits that focus on American military or war history.
Kindergarten students can honor veterans by putting on a special program in their classroom for them. Students can make invitations with American symbols on them, such as the American flag, and give them to veterans in their family or family friends. Your students can decorate the classroom with red, white and blue streamers and balloons. They can perform a skit and sing patriotic songs, such as "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" and "America the Beautiful." You can design a certificate to give to each veteran during the program. Serve refreshments with a patriotic theme (see Resources).
