Young students can make cards to welcome the president to his new home at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The practice will allow the students to develop their fine motor skills through coloring the cards and will allow them to practice some writing as they learn new vocabulary words.
Kindergarteners can have a watch party in class. Have some juice and patriotic snacks and give each student an activity packet to complete during the ceremony to keep them focused on the day's historic activities. The packet can include some coloring pages, a matching game with famous presidents and instructions to make their own swearing-in ceremony diorama.
Pick out a fun book to read to your students that has a presidential theme. Choose a book about how a famous president grew up or what it would be like to visit the Capitol and explore Washington, D.C. Follow up the listening session with a discussion about the importance of the day's ceremony.
After watching the Inaugural Day activities on television or hearing about them during listening time, the students may want to make some costumes to dress up as famous presidents and act out their own Kindergarten inauguration. The students can take oaths to treat each other respectfully and to share and be helpful and then make a certificate to take home.
