Encourage class participation by using the Promethean board to present practice lessons in which students can sort, select or match answers. Younger students can use the Promethean pens that are included with the board to practice simple math problems. Older students can group words into parts of speech by using the mouse-like pointer. Promethean board software allows for part of the board to be hidden. Hide the correct response and reveal it at the end of the lesson or each answer so students can instantly check their response.
Use a Promethean board for lectures. Write notes before the lecture or write them as you lecture. The ActivBoard can save your notes so you can use them in future lessons or supply them to students who were not present during the lecture. Show pictures on the board that you have previously saved or find them “on the fly” with a connected Internet connection. Write on the board as you lecture. These notes can also be saved and later converted to Word documents.
Use the board to play interactive review games. Display flash-based games like Jeopardy or interactive websites such as simulation games on the Promethean board. Use the games as a review or to present material in a different way. Supplemental ActivSlates allow individual students to interact with the whiteboard from anywhere in the classroom. Use the slates to distribute to teams in a game playing scenario.
ActiveBoards are used to present material to business people as well as educators. In both cases, research shows that the material is understood in a timelier and more inclusive fashion in an interactive environment. A case study by British Telecom states that the use of the ActivBoard in training its sales staff has raised standards and improved learning. Educators also benefit from training in the use of the ActivBoard. When the Promethean is used in staff development, teachers become more familiar with the multiple uses of the board and include the ActivBoard in their lessons.
