Ideas for a Promethean Board

A Promethean board is a tool used in the classroom. It is an interactive board that is connected to a computer. Think of it as a touchscreen, only projected to a larger audience. Students can use a special pen, or in some cases their fingers (depending on the board), as they would paper and pencil, to do everything from draw to solving algebra problems.
  1. Pre-K Board Ideas

    • Promethean boards allow you to project anything from your computer to the screen, so letting younger children have the experience of hands-on technology can be vital to their early education. One idea is to create a flipchart of alphabet pictures and set the writing area to the lined practice area. Little kids love writing on the board, so they can practice flipping through the picture dictionary, and writing the corresponding letter, on the lined board. It is an incentive to let a "helper" flip from one page to the next, and since most boards come with more than one pen, you can allow multiple students to work on separate sections of the white board.

    Early Childhood Idea

    • Most Promethean boards come with Activote. Activote (or CPS clickers, depending on what software your school purchased) work like hand-held remote controls. One way to use them is to create a test with PowerPoint or a similar slideshow program so that each question has its own slide. Students can use their clickers to click in or text answers, and then you can show the results on the board. From there, splitting the screen and allowing a volunteer to scroll through the reading material, while another student finds and highlights textual clues that prove their answer, is a way to keep kids engaged in their assessment.

Middle School and High School Ideas

    • Doing math problems on the board might not seem particularly engaging, but when you can connect your computer to another classroom, either across the country or even across the globe, it can be quite fun to see how others learn. This requires a webcam. If you are working in the sciences, the Promethean board allows you to stop and zoom in on particular parts of the video. Then students can either use their clickers to answer questions, or can come up and use pre-made flipcharts to scroll though various charts and graphs. Some schools use their Promethean boards to allow students to do simple drill activities such as diagramming sentences. It saves a lot of time because the teacher already has the lesson plan and materials on their computer; the board just allows the student to be the teacher and get hands-on with the lesson.

    Special Education

    • Depending on the child's need, this board is adaptable for many different skill sets. If the student is visually impaired, the material can be projected to an easier reading size. There is also a text-to-speech function that will read loaded websites, presentations, documents -- just about anything. For students who are aurally impaired, you can do a simple closed captioning of anything from an Internet video to a documentary. Then you can use the highlight or marker tool to let the students highlight words they need from the closed captioning and access dictionary and encyclopedic knowledge. The key is that they have control of the board and the tools for what they need. Lower-functioning students might need assistance with some of the material, but it is still engaging to allow them to work at their own pace on a huge board. Flipping through the charts, or helping with hand-eye coordination with the clickers, is also beneficial.
