Multicultural Bulletin Board Ideas for Teachers

Communicate and promote multiculturalism in public spaces using bulletin boards. Many schools include promoting multiculturalism in their mission or vision statements and this is an excellent way to practice what is important to the organization. Both students and teachers will learn about diversity and gain a deeper appreciation for cultural differences from bulletin boards that effectively use the space to create a positive and meaningful message. Promote multiculturalism by creating bulletin boards that are both entertaining and educational.
  1. Holidays Around the World

    • Most holiday themed bulletin boards can be made into multicultural holiday bulletin boards. Research how different cultures celebrate holidays and incorporate what you find into your holiday bulletin board. For example, for a Christmas bulletin board, highlight some of the different ways countries celebrate Christmas. While other countries recognize a Santa Claus figure, the figure usually looks different and may have a different role. Or some countries celebrate a different holiday at the same time of year.

    Diversity Makes the World Great

    • Create a bulletin board that showcases the many contributions immigrants or people from other countries have made to modern society. From inventions to medicine to philosophy...modern society is the result of a global effort. Students will likely be surprised to find out where some inventions came from. You can even narrow it down to a theme such as communication. For example, list where paper, the printing press, the newspaper, the telephone and the internet were invented.

    Multicultural Heroes

    • There are many multicultural heroes that deserve to be showcased on your bulletin board. Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. are important multicultural heroes. Incorporate famous quotes that promote diversity and tell about the heroes lives and work. Display pictures of heroes, list their accomplishments and what they contributed to society and why they are important.

    Student Contributors

    • Ask students to contribute to a multicultural bulletin board. Students can write about what multicultural diversity means to them or why they think it is important. Or have students research their own ancestors and make a list of different cultures or nationalities in their lineage. Engaging students in the creation of a multicultural bulletin board makes the display meaningful and helps students learn in the process.

    Cultural Highlight

    • Frequently change your bulletin board to highlight a different culture or country. Provide a world map and mark the cultural or nationality's location on the map. Provide information about the language, contributions to society and interesting facts about the place you have selected. Display a list of cultural similarities and differences. Students will learn about different cultures from the bulletin board.

    Educational Multicultural Bulletin Board

    • Educate students about multiculturalism by defining it and displaying the reason it is important. Use a multicultural calendar, map of the world and visually presented statistics (charts and graphs) about immigration as ideas for decorating the board, while providing educational information.
