Bulletin Board Ideas for Positive Students in Classroom

Sending a good message is important for encouraging positive attitudes in students. In his 2011 article titled "Parenting: The Right Attitude for Sending Messages to Your Children," Jim Taylor, Ph.D. writes about the importance of repetition and persistence in sending positive messages. A bulletin board helps you achieve these attributes because it is a constant presence around the students, and allows teachers to communicate a visual message to a large group at one time, all without saying a word.
  1. Encouraging Positive Behavior

    • Encourage students to exhibit good behavior by tracking and rewarding them on a bulletin board. Place the name of each student on the left side of the board, and five columns across the board. Label the columns one, two, three, four and five. Each time a student displays good behavior, as defined by the instructor, the student’s name is moved into the next column. Students who reach the fifth column receive a reward at the end of a pre-determined date. Not only does this encourage good behavior, but it allows students to monitor and encourage each other toward a goal.

    Positive Role Models

    • Create a bulletin board with images and quotes from positive role models. Role models can include local heroes, sports celebrities or civic leaders. You can also choose role models from the body of students. Place a short, encouraging story about something a student accomplished, along with her photo and some interesting information about her. Peer role models can be changed out weekly or monthly.

    Positive Messages

    • Create a bulletin board with a positive quote in large print across the top of the board. Pin a marker attached to a string to the board, along with blank index cards along the bottom of the bulletin board. Ask students to write down ideas on how they can exemplify this behavior, or when they witnessed this positive message in action. This encourages students to comprehend the message and translate it into day-to-day behavior.

    Creating Goals

    • Encourage students to achieve goals by making a goals bulletin board. Cut out several circles to create a bullseye, and create an overall goal for the board. Make a label at the top of the board to remind students of the goal. Choose goals like learning the multiplication tables, finishing an assigned book or memorizing all the states. As a student moves closer to completing the goal, move a pin with his name attached to it, toward the center of the bullseye.

    Sharing Happiness

    • Allow students to share the things that make them happy by creating a board with a large heart or smiley face in the center. Place smaller hearts or faces on a table under the board, and allow students to write down the things that make them happy; pin them to the board.
