Welcoming New Students Bulletin Board Ideas for a Preschool Classroom

A new school year can be exciting for preschoolers. They've heard about school from older siblings and on television, and now it's their turn to finally experience it. They're looking forward to the many crafts and activities they'll get to do, and they've likely got some ideas of what school will be like. Get your students off to a great start with a bulletin board that welcomes them to your classroom.
  1. On The Road To A Great Year

    • Preschoolers may be excited about being able to ride a school bus or at the prospect of finally being included in school-related activities. They may enjoy seeing their name on a school bus on this very simple bulletin board. You'll want to cover the background with red butcher paper (it complements bright yellow buses nicely), then outline your board with school bus-themed border. With black construction paper, create a road with white dashes going down the middle. Your road can be straight or you can have it curved and going all over the board. Write the names of your students on school bus bulletin board cutouts, then staple them to the road. You can title your board, "On The Road To A Great Year" and print the title on paper that has a school bus background. If you want, you can also add bulletin board road signs to your board.

    "Bee" Happy

    • This bulletin board will have your students buzzing around with excitement. You'll use light blue butcher paper for the background (though if you use fabric, it'll last longer and the light blue matches several other scenes later in the year). For the border, you can use anything bee-related: flowers, bees or honey pots. With yellow butcher paper or construction paper, cut a large (big enough to be the center piece on your board) bee hive and glue three or four bumblebee bulletin board pieces to it. In the empty background space, staple more bumblebees and write your students' names on each one. Title your board, "'Bee' Happy You're In Mrs. Smith's Preschool Class" or "We're Buzzing Into Preschool."

    A Great New Lineup

    • This bulletin board idea will let your students play a part in decorating it. You'll use a light blue background (to represent the sky) and any colorful border you'd like. On a white, large child-sized t-shirt, stencil on the letters to spell "A Great New Lineup" in fabric paint. (Alternatively, you could just cut out the letters from construction paper and staple them onto the shirt when the shirt is up on the board.) Staple the t-shirt to the center of your board. Above the shirt, staple a piece of white yarn or string that is the length of your board and do the same on the bottom. You can provide your students with a t-shirt cut from white card stock (about 6 to 7 inches tall, so it's big enough to really decorate) with their name on it and let them decorate it. When they're done, use craft clothespins to attach the t-shirts to the "line" (the yarn).
