Interactive Sites on Learning Styles

Students learn in different ways. Some are visual learners, others auditory or kinesthetic (hands-on) learners. It is important for students to be aware of their individual learning styles in order to be successful in school and for teachers to be aware of the learning styles present in the classroom to design lessons and activities to help all students succeed. There are a variety of websites that allow students to discover their learning styles and teachers to design activities to fit those styles.
  1. Learning Styles Analysis

    • LDPride (ldpride.net), a website focused on bringing awareness of learning disabilities, offers an online learning styles test. Test-takers respond to 30 statements, such as "I follow oral directions better than written ones" with an answer of "not like me," "a little like me," "like me" and "a lot like me." After taking the test, users are given the option to purchase a six-page analysis of their learning style for $8.95. An e-mail address is required to receive test results. Passing Exams (passingexams.co.nz), a test prep company, offers a similar test where users can print the test and analyze their own results for free.

    Left or Right Brain

    • The BBC's Key Skills website (bbc.co.uk) offers an interactive quiz to determine whether you are a left- or right-brain learner. Test-takers answer a series of 10 true/false questions such as "I am good at organizing" and are told at the end of the quiz whether they are left- or right-brain learners. After taking the left- or right-brain quiz, users can take two additional five-question quizzes that provide more specific information about individual learning styles. All quizzes are free and no personal information is required to see the results.

    A Different Place

    • A Different Place (adifferentplace.org) is an online resource that provides differentiated learning activities for teachers, parents and students. Teachers can use this resource to find lesson plans to appeal to a variety of learning styles in their classrooms. Students can search the website to find activities in specific subject areas that best relate to their individual learning styles. This site appeals most to visual learners.

    LSU Learning Strategies Online

    • The Center for Academic Success at Louisiana State University offers a learning strategies website. This resource offers three free learning styles tests for students to take based on left-/right-brain learning, sensory preferences and personality. After taking the learning styles tests, students can participate in online workshops that relate specific learning styles to time management, note-taking and test-prep skills.
