School Projects on Medieval Maces

Looking for a history project that will catch your teacher's attention and still be interesting for you? Consider the medieval mace as the subject of your next project. The weapon was common during the middle ages because it was cheap to make and was effective in combat against armor. Authority figures sometimes used it as a symbol of power, and that symbolism has been passed down to many modern-day governments.
  1. Mace Making

    • Choose a particular style of medieval maces and recreate one. One of the reasons maces were popular in medieval warfare was because they were cheap and easy to make. Research how to make a mace and then create a reproduction. Accompany it with a report that explains the mace's accuracy, the manufacturing technique and the origins for the particular design. Explain also how it would have been used in warfare and what its advantages were.

    Mace History

    • Research the history of the medieval mace. As a weapon, it can be traced back to the Stone Age. Create a timeline and then provide historically significant details to major points on the timeline. Present the information on a poster or create a website with video recordings in which you narrate major events. Be sure to explain why the mace was considered an effective weapon, who used it and what type of historical and archaeological evidence we have of maces.

    Mace Experiment

    • One of the reasons maces were used during medieval times was because of their effectiveness against metal armor. Design an experiment in which you can demonstrate why a mace was effective against armor. Begin with a hypothesis, research the information and then set up the demonstration in such a way that it can be repeated multiple times. As a comparison, repeat the experiment with different medieval weapons and compare the results. Create a graph to present your findings.

    Medieval Short Story Writing

    • Apply your creative skills to a medieval mace project by writing a story in which the weapon figures prominently. Use historically accurate facts, but let your imagination run wild in other ways. Perhaps the story will involve a group of knights on a quest for a mace with spiritual significance. Perhaps you will have a blacksmith trying to design a better mace. Perhaps your story will feature a duchess who defends her castle and servants with a mace while her husband and his knights are away on the Crusades.
