At the beginning of every school year, teachers provide lists to their students of needed supplies. For secondary students, there may be up to six or seven separate lists, including art, science lab and technology items. Creating a school store that stocks its inventory based on teacher requirements provides a valuable service to students and parents alike.
If the school enacts a stringent dress code or uniform policy, consider selling the required items on campus in a school store. As students will often outgrow uniforms before wearing them out, particularly at the middle school level, consigning gently used uniforms is also an option. Parents appreciate the cost savings on gently worn items and the opportunity to donate or consign their child's outgrown items.
Selling books doesn't always require large displays that take up space. Allow students to consign books online, and bring in the book once a buyer is located. Work with the librarian to sell older library inventory, listing them in your online inventory. Communicate with teachers to stock the books they choose as required reading, and possibly buy back books in good condition for resale.
Students love to purchase items promoting their school. Purchase items featuring school colors and printed with the school mascot, motto and name. Consider auctioning off or reselling retired sports uniforms and equipment. Allow school artists to consign their work, and work with school booster clubs to sell their items for a commission.
