Making a stained glass Earth can give students a larger perspective about the appearance of the planet in which they live. To make a stained glass Earth, place a piece of wax paper onto a flat surface. Place a small cheese grater onto the wax paper, and shave blue and green wax crayons onto the sheet. After the surface is covered with shavings, place a second sheet of wax paper on top of it. Iron on top of the second sheet, effectively melting the shavings underneath and adhering the sheets of wax paper together. Allow the sheets to cool completely. Once cool, cut out a circle from the pages. Poke a hole into the circle and hang up the stained glass Earth by a piece of string threaded into the hole.
A space diorama can allow students to display different elements of astronomy. Start by placing an empty shoebox onto a table, and painting the inside of the box with black tempera or acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry completely. Stick metallic star stickers inside the box to represent the stars in space. Cut out planet and space shuttle shapes from construction paper, then tape a string onto each shape. Tape the other ends of the strings inside the box. This will make the planets and shuttles seem to float in space.
Galaxies are some of the most beautiful elements in the universe and can be recreated using glitter and black construction paper. Squeeze a dollop of craft glue into the middle of a sheet of black construction paper. Squeeze curved lines of glue curling out around the entire perimeter of the center. Sprinkle glitter over the entire page, and allow the glue to dry completely. Shake off he excess glitter, then display your glittery galaxy.
