Divide the class up into two teams, one to argue for uniforms and one to argue against them. Require students to do research on their side before the day of the debate. They should find arguments such as the ability of school uniforms to curb theft of clothing items at school or that school uniforms stifle the students' ability to express themselves. The students will take turns presenting their debate points.
In an art class or a design course elective, have students design school uniforms. You could give them total free range if you want, or you could give them some guidelines. For example, you might tell them that the uniform has to include both a style for warm days and a another for cold days. They could also be required to use certain colors or to put the school's slogan or insignia on the outfit.
Bring mathematics into this project. Have the students go around to other classes in the school, to their family members or to their friends at home, and ask them if they think that schools should require their students to wear uniforms. After the students have gathered the information, ask them to present it to the class in some mathematical manner. For example, they may opt to create a pie chart or a bar graph representing the data.
Have students write a mock newspaper article presenting both sides of the debate on school uniforms. They could cite scholarly sources or quote individuals from the community in the article. Another idea is to require the students to write a research paper about the history of school uniforms. They could include the first school uniform, when school uniforms began popular and where school uniforms seem to be heading in the future.
