Borax Activities

Borax, also known as sodium borate, is a common household cleaner and chemical found in many laundry detergents. It can also be used to create a variety of items such as silly putty and crystal snowflakes to help teach students the principles of chemistry. Boxes of borax can be found in the laundry detergent aisle of most major grocery stores.
  1. Borax Snowflake

    • To make a borax snowflake, cut a pipe cleaner into three equal sections and twist the sections together at the centers to make a snowflake shape. Tie a string to one end of the pipe cleaners and the other end of the string to a pencil. Fill a wide-mouth glass jar with boiling water. Add three tablespoons of borax for every cup of water. After the borax has dissolved, place the snowflake in the jar with the pencil resting on top. Let the mixture sit overnight. The next day, remove the snowflake from the jar and observe the borax crystals.

    Bouncy Balls

    • Begin making bouncy balls by labeling two plastic cups with "borax" and "bouncy ball." In the borax cup, mix four ounces warm water and one teaspoon borax. Add one tablespoon of white glue and a few drops of food coloring into the bouncy ball cup. Then add half a teaspoon of the borax mixture and one tablespoon of cornstarch to the bouncy ball cup, but do not stir for fifteen seconds. Once the mixture becomes too tough to stir, remove the mixture and knead it in your hands to form a ball. Allow the balls to sit for a few minutes, then begin bouncing. Keep the balls bouncy by storing them in a sealed container.

    Silly Putty

    • Silly Putty is a silicone polymer toy marketed by Crayola that can bounce, stretch and be molded into a variety of shapes. Borax can be used to make a homemade version of Silly Putty. Pour an eight-ounce bottle of white glue into a bowl. Fill the empty bottle with water, shake it up and pour it into the bowl as well. In a small cup, add one-half cup of warm water and a teaspoon of borax and mix well. Slowly add the borax mixture to the glue mixture, stirring as you go. Once mixed, you'll have your own version of Silly Putty. The creation can be stored in a plastic zipper bag or plastic container with a lid.

    Slime

    • Create some gooey slime to play with. Fill a small cup with water and add a spoonful of borax. Fill another small cup with approximately one inch of water and add three tablespoons of water. Add a few drops of food coloring. Then add one tablespoon of the borax mixture. Stir and watch the slime form. Remove the slime from the cup and watch it stretch and move. Be careful not to place the slime on surfaces that can stain from the food coloring.
