How to Arrange Silverware to Make Numbers 1-10

If you have a little extra time before a meal, table settings can be put to use for a hands-on math lesson. Use silverware to make the numbers 1 through 10 as a fun way to help your kids visualize the formation of each number. For young kids, give them a sheet of paper with each number on it and ask them to replicate it in silverware, using the paper as a guide. Let older kids experiment with creating their own designs for silverware numerals.

Instructions

  1. Numbers

    • 1

Set a single butter knife in the vertical position to make the number 1.

    • 2

Lay a spoon horizontally. Position a knife vertically coming down from the right edge of the spoon. Set a fork horizontally off the bottom edge of the knife and going left. Place a spoon vertically off the left edge of the fork. Position a fork horizontally off the bottom edge of the spoon and going to the right to make the number 2.

    • 3

Put down a spoon in the horizontal position. Place a knife vertically off the right end of the spoon. Place another spoon diagonally at the bottom edge of the knife, going down and to the left. Center a third spoon in the horizontal position between the previous two spoons to make the middle arm of the number 3.

    • 4

Set a knife down vertically. Put a spoon horizontally off of the bottom of the knife so the spoon is headed to the right of the knife. Place another knife vertically so it's underneath the midpoint of the spoon. Position the knife so half is above the spoon and half is below the spoon to make the number 4.

    • 5

Position a spoon horizontally. Put a fork running vertically off the left edge of the spoon. Set a knife horizontally and going to the right of the bottom edge of the fork. Take another fork and set it vertically off the right edge of the knife. Place a spoon horizontally off the bottom edge of the fork and going to the left to make the number 5.

    • 6

Place a knife vertically. Place another knife vertically so it overlaps the first knife with half of the second knife extending above the first knife. Put a spoon running horizontally off the bottom edge of the first knife and going to the right. Use a fork to make the vertical line extending upward off the right edge of the spoon. Set a spoon horizontally off the top edge of the fork and going to the left so the edge of the spoon touches the line of knives. Use another knife and angle it off the edge of the line of knives, extending upward and to the right to make the number 6.

    • 7

Place two knives vertically so the top knife overlaps the bottom knife about halfway. Run a spoon horizontally off of the top of the knives and going to the left. Set a fork vertically off the left edge of the spoon to make number 7.

    • 8

Make a large box, two pieces of silverware long and one piece of silverware wide. Cut the box in half with another piece of silverware, turning the box into two smaller boxes, one on top of the other to make the number 8.

    • 9

Make a vertical line using two pieces of silverware. Use one piece of silverware to run a horizontal line off the top of the vertical line and going to the left. Make a vertical line going up off the left end of the horizontal line using one piece of silverware. Set one piece of silverware horizontally at the top of the short vertical line going right. Place a final piece of silverware vertically at the right end of the top horizontal line so it connects with the original long vertical to make number 9.

    • 10

Make a large box that's two pieces of silverware long and one piece of silverware wide. Make a vertical line two pieces of silverware long just to the left of the box to make the number 10.

    Roman Numerals

    • 11

Place a single piece of silverware vertically for the Roman numeral 1. Add a second piece of silverware vertically beside the first for the Roman numeral 2 and a third piece piece vertically beside the previous two to make the Roman numeral 3.

    • 12

Make two pieces of silverware create an V shape and set a single piece of silverware vertically to the left of the V shape to make the Roman numeral 4.

    • 13

Make two pieces of silverware into a V shape to form the Roman numeral 5. Add a vertical line made of a single piece of silverware to the right of the V for 6. Add a second piece of vertical silverware to the right of the V to make the Roman numeral 7, and add a third vertical for the Roman numeral 8.

    • 14

Take two pieces of silverware and cross them over each other to form an X. Place a vertical line made with one piece of silverware to the left of the X to create the Roman numeral 9. Remove the vertical line and leave the X for the Roman numeral 10.
