How to Make a Subtraction Table

A subtraction table is a grid that shows the solution to each subtraction problem defined by the numbers on the top and left sides of the graph. The numbers along the side represent the numbers to be subtracted from, or the minuends, while the numbers at the top represent the numbers to be subtracted, or the subtrahends. To use the graph to solve a subtraction problem, find the minuend on the left side, then follow that row across the graph until it intersects with the column that holds the subtrahend. The number in the box where the row and column intersect is the answer to the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw 15 evenly-spaced vertical lines on a piece of paper to make the columns for your chart. Make each column wide enough to accommodate a two-digit number, plus its sign.

    • 2

Draw 15 evenly-spaced horizontal lines on top of the vertical lines to create a grid.

    • 3

Write the numbers zero through 12 in permanent marker across the first row and down the first column, one number per box.

    • 4

Subtract each number in the top row from each number in the left column and write the answer in the box formed by the intersection of appropriate row and column. Write positive numbers in black ink and negative numbers in red ink.

    • 5

Shade the boxes that have negative numbers with the red colored pencil, then shade those that have positive numbers with the blue pencil. Leave all the boxes with the number zero white.
