How to Make an Elephant Graph

When studying a jungle animal theme in your classroom, consider integrating math and instructing students to construct an elephant graph. Use images of elephants in a pictograph format to visually represent collected information such as a classroom vote on the students' favorite type of elephant. Pictographs are graphs that stack pictures on top of one another to measure a value, similar to a bar graph. The concept is taught in elementary school, beginning in first and second grade and advancing to fifth grade graphing activities that may involve a symbolic legend where each picture stands for a higher value.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a new word-processing document and draw a table that contains two columns and five rows. Select "File" and "Save As" to save the blank table to your computer.

    • 2

Insert an elephant image outline into one of the table boxes. Use an image from the computer's clipart stock or download one from a free clipart site for educators such as ABC Teach or Awesome Clipart for Educators.

    • 3

Copy and paste the elephant image into the center of all the other table boxes. Save the document as a separate file and print one copy for every five students.

    • 4

Close the elephant image document and reopen the blank table document. Draw a text box underneath each column and, for example, label the x-axis columns "African Elephants" and "Asian Elephants."

    • 5

Number each horizontal line of the table. Label the bottom line, where the x-axis is, 0. Label the second line 1, the third line 2, the fourth line 3, the fifth line 4 and the sixth line 5. Save the document and print one copy for every five students.

    • 6

Place the students into groups of five and have each student declare which elephant is their personal favorite between the African and Asian elephants. Record the results on a separate piece of paper.

    • 7

Instruct each group to cut out five elephant images from the elephant document, color them with colored pencils and glue the pictures to the labeled table according to the voting results. For example, if three students voted for African elephants and two students voted for Asian elephants, paste three elephant images in the African elephant column beginning at the bottom and up to the number 3. Paste two elephant images from the table's bottom to the number 2 in the Asian elephant column to symbolize two votes.
