How to Make a Nefertiti Hat

The Nefertiti bust is a well-known ancient Egyptian artifact that depicts Nefertiti, the Great Wife of the pharaoh Akhenaten (who was also called Amenhotep IV). In this piece from the more realistic Amarna era of art, Nefertiti wears a tall, blue and semi-conical hat with several decorations. Making a Nefertiti hat is an art project that can supplement a history lesson.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread newspaper on a flat work surface and obtain several pictures of the Nefertiti bust, each one displaying the statue at a different angle.

    • 2

Shred the newspaper into strips, either by hand or using scissors.

    • 3

Mix equal parts white glue and water in a bowl.

    • 4

      Inflate the long balloon.

    • 5

Dip a piece of newspaper into the glue and water mix and place it on the balloon.

    • 6

Layer more pieces of papier mache onto the balloon, shaping it into the basic design of the hat. Use the balloon as a base.

    • 7

Apply more layers to the top end of the hat so that it is wider than the bottom

    • 8

Layer on strips across the top of the hat when the other layers match up with the end of the balloon. Shape the end of the balloon into a flat surface.

    • 9

Shape the section crossing the forehead, making it less thick than the rest of the hat. This will be the golden section of the hat.

    • 10

Shape the bow that stands out in relief on the hat with some papier mache strips. Use the pictures as a guide.

    • 11

Let the papier mache fully dry. Remove the balloon.

    • 12

Mix the paints to match the shades on the Nefertiti hat.

    • 13

Draw the outline of the multi-colored "ribbon" part of the hat with a pencil. Paint the ribbon part of the hat with the smaller paintbrush in sections, letting each section dry before moving on to the next one.

    • 14

Paint the bow part of the hat with the smaller paintbrush. Let this dry.

    • 15

Paint the blue portion of the hat in sections with the larger paintbrush, letting each section dry before painting another section. Do the same for the larger golden portion of the hat. Let the hat dry.
