How to Make Lichen

Lichen are unique symbiotic, or co-dependent, organisms that form when a compatible alga cell and fungus join and develop as one. The fungus contributes to the process by growing a covering called a thallus, and the alga produces a substance for food. Lichen often attach to rocks and trees. Lichen are used in some cultures as food and in others as natural sources of dye. They are also used for air-quality monitoring. In theory, a person can cultivate lichen by introducing the original fungus and alga. However, most available recipes include existing lichen that have been dried and powdered.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a hospitable environment for your lichen. Moist, shady, isolated northward- facing places at the base of porous rocks and tree branches are recommended.

    • 2

Fill the spray bottle with a mixture of one-half cup of yogurt and one-half cup of water. Saturate the area where you'd like the lichen to grow.

    • 3

Spread the powdered lichen in the area you sprayed. Prepare the yogurt water formula again, and spray the powered lichen. Repeat treatments with the yogurt-water mixture every three to four days. Watch for signs of dryness, and spray at these times, as well.

    • 4

Monitor your developing garden. Spores should appear within three months. If no spores appear, use a paint brush to apply seaweed fertilizer, and continue your spray bottle treatments.

    • 5

Continue spraying until your lichen begin to grow, and enjoy watching your garden develop. Add water during times of extreme heat or drought to keep your lichen healthy.
