A perimeter is nothing more than the total distance of the outer boundary of a two-dimensional surface. To make a perimeter, therefore, you simply have to outline or mark the length and width borders of an area. Perimeters come in all kinds of shapes: squares, rectangles, circles, triangles, pentagons and hexagons. As long as the shape is closed -- meaning all of the sides are connected -- it has a perimeter. Perimeters are created every time you make a closed-figured shape.

1
Draw a closed figured shape. The perimeter is the outline of the shape.

2
Get a map. Mark the outer boundary of the area on the map that you want to concentrate on. Be sure the boundary outline forms a closed figure. The perimeter is the outline of the boundary.

Use building materials -- such as glue and Popsicle sticks -- to construct a closed figured shape. The perimeter is the shape's outline.
