How to Make Dr. Suess Hats in School

Dr. Suess books are timeless classics. One of his most perennial works is "The Cat in the Hat" which was published in 1957. The titular hat has become iconic with its red and white stripes and height. Children who are studying Dr. Seuss may benefit from making one on their own. They can wear the hat while studying and reading his books.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a sheet of red construction paper around a child's head and mark where the two ends meet.

    • 2

Glue the two ends together at the mark you made and allow to dry. You can work on the next steps while it dries. This will be the base of the hat.

    • 3

Draw three lines 1 inch thick across the white piece of construction paper, length-wise. Cut these lines out so that you have three long strips.

    • 4

Glue one of the white strips around the length of the red base, 1 inch from the bottom. It is fine if it overlaps a little bit once it is wrapped around.

    • 5

Glue the second white strip onto the hat base, 1 inch away from the first. This will begin the red-white-red stripes that make the hat.

    • 6

Glue the final white strip onto the hat, 1 inch from the last.

    • 7

Lay a piece of white construction paper down on your work surface. Place the red hat on top and trace around the base with a pencil. Set the hat aside to finish drying.

    • 8

Draw the numbers 12, 3, 6 and 9 inside the circle you just drew, as if it were a clock. Draw a square around each number with the circle forming one of the sides of each square.

    • 9

Cut out the inside of circle from the white paper, leaving the numbered squares attached to the paper for tabs.

    • 10

Draw another circle on the white paper, 2-3 inches wider than the circle you just cut out. Cut the outside of the circle out to form the brim of the hat.

    • 11

Place glue on the four numbered squares. Place the hat over the hole your cut out and fold the four squares up so they are glued to the inside of the hat. Set aside to dry thoroughly.
