How to Find School Boundaries

While private and parochial schools can be selective, their students are usually chosen based on their academic performance or ability to pay tuition. Public schools, however, admit students based on their home address. Because districts sometimes change school boundaries, and policies on school choice can vary from state to state, it's always important to verify the school for which your kids are zoned.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your local board of education. Provide your street address. Find out the name of the school district that corresponds with your geographical location.

    • 2

Contact the office of your school district that administers boundaries. Provide your street address and the grade your child attends. District personnel will be able to tell you the school for which your child is zoned.

    • 3

Inquire into the school district's open enrollment policies, if you're interested in registering your child in a school for which she is not zoned. Ask what proof-of-address documents are required. Request the address of the website where you can obtain necessary forms.

    • 4

Find out if bus service is offered to students where you live. Request a school boundaries map, in the event that you do not yet reside in the district and are just conducting research. Review the map yourself to confirm that the attendance area information you've been given is accurate.
