How to Find Technical Colleges

The term "technical school" applies to technical colleges, trade schools and vocational schools. Technical schools offer certificates in a variety of fields such as medical and dental assistance, appliance repair, massage, interior design, photography, culinary and computer programs such as web design. Students often receive certification in less than two years, making technical schools more appealing because of the vocational topics available and the time frame. Students should consider many factors when trying to find a technical college.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what career field you are most interested in. Since different technical schools offer different certificates, choosing a career will lead you to the best school for you. Many schools include links to aptitude tests that help you pinpoint your interests and abilities. Once you have narrowed your search, read through the career options and other information available at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (See Resources 1) to learn about education and training requirements, job outlook and advancement opportunities to be sure your choice is right for you.

    • 2

Investigate to see if online learning is right for you. Online institutions often have questionnaires on their sites that help you decide if you can get the most from online classes. They look for your ability to organize, self-motivate and work without as much feedback as traditional courses. However, online programs also typically offer more flexibility in scheduling. If hands-on learning works better for you, visit technical schools in your area to get a firsthand look at the facilities.

Talk to a high school counselor. Even if you have been out of school for a while, the high school advisor is a good source of information about tech schools. Find out about certificates available, costs and reputation since some have more involved and more effective programs than others.

    • 4

Search through educational sites or search engines for technical schools that offer your career program and the delivery you want. Try using terms for your career choice along with the different terms used above: technical college, technical school and vocational school.

    • 5

Examine other publications for information about student experiences. Barron's Profiles of American Colleges, available in most libraries and career resource centers, and The Princeton Review online are two good sources.

    • 6

Ask questions about what is important to you. Can you transfer credits to another school? Is there job placement assistance? Is financial aid available?

    • 7

Choose a school that is accredited. The U.S. Department of Education provides a list of accrediting agencies (See References 3). If a school is not listed there, the certification you receive may not be accepted by other schools or employers.
