Good Technical Colleges

A variety of good technical colleges can be found throughout the United States. Even if you don't have the grades or test scores to get into the best school, highly rated technical schools exist that admit students with less-than-perfect scores. According to Trade and Vocational Schools and "U.S. News and World Report," a diverse selection of top-rated technical colleges are available in the U.S.
  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

    • Massachusetts Institute of Technology has strict requirements for applicants. In 2009, the middle 50 percent of admitted applicants scored between 730 and 800 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Only 10.7 percent of applicants are admitted to the school. In MIT's Whitaker College of Health Sciences and Technology, students can study a number of disciplines, including biosciences and technology, medical engineering and bioastronautics, with courses such as a clinical approach to the human brain, the art and science of medicine and molecular simulations. MIT's number-one-ranked engineering school offers degrees in mechanical engineering, nuclear science and engineering, aeronautics and electrical engineering and computer science. MIT's School of Science offers degrees in biology, chemistry, math and physics, with courses such as biochemistry, organic synthesis, functional analysis and quantum physics, respectively.

    Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Virginia

    • Ranked 66th by "U.S. News and World Report," Virginia Polytechnic Institute offers over 70 undergraduate degrees. In the College of Engineering, students can study chemical general engineering, aerospace and ocean engineering or computer science, while taking courses such as green engineering, astromechanics and performance evaluation of computer systems, respectively. In the College of Science, students can study biochemistry, mathematics and physics, while taking courses such as analytical chemistry, operational methods for engineers and observational astrophysics. Applicants to Virginia Polytechnic should submit a $50 application fee (as of 2010), application form, SAT scores, an official transcript and a list of her high school senior level classes. The middle 50 percent of admitted students in 2009 had a 1250 SAT score and a 3.94 GPA.

    ITT Technical Institute Online

    • According to Trade and Vocational Schools, a website dedicated to finding good online trade schools, ITT Tech offers online degrees and has over 100 campuses in the nation. Students can participate in such ITT programs as School of Information Technology, School of Electronics Technology and School of Drafting and Design, with online degree options in specific areas of information technology, computer forensics and web design. Physical campuses offer degrees in data communications, software development and engineering technology. Applicants must have finished high school and must send an official transcript along with an application form.
