How to Report Truancy in Manteno, Illinois

Illinois law defines a truant as anyone 17 and under who misses 10 percent or more of the 180-day school year without a recognized excuse such as illness or family hardship. In Manteno, Illinois, only about two out of every 100 students in the city's school system is truant, about half the state average. Community residents can help keep that percentage low by reporting truancy whenever they see it. To report truancy, contact the school district's administration office or call the Kankakee County Regional Office of Education.

Instructions

    • 1

Become acquainted with the Manteno school district calendar, which can be found on the school district's website and shows dates when classes are in session between August and June. Make a mental note if you see children between the ages of 7 and 17 who are out of school on any of those days and outside in your neighborhood, where you shop or at city parks.

    • 2

Attempt to get the names of those young people if you determine repeated instances -- typically 18 days or more -- when they are out of Manteno's classrooms on school days. Don't risk your personal safety to do so if the child appears threatening or is in a group with older children.

Provide a name of the student or students who you believe may be truant or, at a minimum, report the location or address where you have seen them.
